SUBLIME WITH AMY SHERALD
SATURDAY, JUNE 21st at 7:00PM
THE WHITNEY MUSEUM | 99 Gansevoort Street, New York, NY 10014
Presented in partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art
Join us for a rare, cross-disciplinary experience created especially for Little Island’s Teen Access Program.
On Saturday, June 21, participants will explore the acclaimed exhibition Amy Sherald: American Sublime at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Best known for her iconic portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama, Sherald has redefined contemporary portraiture with visionary depictions of Black life. Facilitators will guide a private tour of the exhibition, offering context and insight into Sherald’s process and the themes that animate her work. Participants will engage in small group response activities, reflecting on questions such as: How can art shape how you want others to see you?—an opportunity to think creatively and critically about identity, representation, and self-expression.
After the museum visit, the evening continues at Little Island with a performance in The Glade, our intimate, tree-lined amphitheater. Curated by Sherald, this new series brings artists into conversation with the tone and spirit of her work. The June 21 program features Yasmin Williams, a groundbreaking guitarist whose deeply expressive style echoes the emotional depth of Sherald’s paintings.
This special collaboration between two of New York’s leading cultural spaces offers young artists a chance to experience creativity across mediums—and connect with one of the most singular voices in American art.
