Stagehand: Carpentry Department
We are seeking stagehands with a focus on carpentry to join the Artistic Programming Department, where they will be responsible for installing, operating, and maintaining the scenic and prop elements for a wide range of multi-disciplinary events and performances.
A successful carpentry stagehand will be a flexible and collaborative team member with a passion for supporting artistic needs, strong problem-solving skills, and extensive hands-on experience in theatrical carpentry. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, with a strong commitment to safety and hospitality in their work. These positions are governed by Little Island’s collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local One and report directly to the Production Manager.
Artistic Programming
Little Island’s artistic programming is dedicated to creating new work in dance, theater, music, and opera. In 2024, the Island launched a commissioning program that featured nine world premieres from distinguished creators, including Twyla Tharp, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Davóne Tines, Henry Hoke, Pam Tanowitz, Britton Smith, Qween Jean, and Chris Thile. By collaborating with artists across genres and disciplines, the program aims to create unique collaborations and projects for our outdoor stages and help ensure their continued success in the future.

Carpentry Department Role(s) and Hourly Rates
- Amph Carpenter: $40.00/hour
- Oversee the execution of all scenery and properties on the Amph stage.
- Supervise work calls, daily stage setup, strike, and general equipment maintenance.
- Operate deck carpentry and/or props tracks during performances.
- Carpentry Overhire: $32.50/hour (through April 28th, 2025), then $33.39/hour
- Serve as overhire carpenter, props carpenter or run crew as-needed for project specific load-ins, load-outs, show runs, and maintenance calls.
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate closely with the Production Manager, Associate Production Manager, project-specific designers, and other Artistic Programming staff to ensure the successful execution of the technical requirements for a variety of events.
- Prepare, load-in, maintain, and load-out scenery and properties, both seasonally and on a day-to-day basis.
- Undertake projects to support the needs of other production departments, including storage configuration, equipment installation, rigging, and other tasks as required.
- Collaborate on stage setup and general production equipment maintenance.
- Adhere to Little Island’s safety protocols and actively contribute to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
- Participate in achieving Little Island’s artistic goals by providing consistent, high-quality production support for a wide range of events.
- Perform other duties related to the park and its artistic programming operations as assigned.
What You Bring
- Relevant carpentry experience, including the ability to read ground plans and construction drawings, and proficiency with a wide variety of hand and power tools.
- Experience with props, including backline setup.
- Strong interest in working in public performance settings, where guest interaction is a frequent component of day-to-day production activities.
- Knowledge of aerial lift operation (including scissor lifts and articulating boom lifts) is a plus.
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs. overhead for sustained periods.
- Comfortable with ascending and descending ladders.
- Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
