About the Role

Little Island is seeking Custodians, Maintenance Technicians, and Visitor Experience Hosts to work in the park in our inaugural season. The ideal team will be composed of dynamic and accountable individuals with excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills. Little Island is open from 6:00 am - 1:00 am daily, and in-park teams are scheduled to work in a way that ensures their department is covered during all operating hours. Candidates who are bilingual or multilingual (including but not limited to Spanish, Mandarin, American Sign Language, etc.) are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Custodians

Provide a self and welcoming environment for all Little Island Visitors by:

  • Cleaning park surfaces, fixtures, and facilities; including onsite performance spaces, restrooms, actor support spaces, and park and food stall fixtures and equipment.
  • Removing snow, ice, leaves, and debris.
  • Monitoring trash receptacles, refresh trash bags, and coordinate trash pick-up with carting service.
  • Having the ability to transport or lift park equipment weighing up to 50 lbs, as well as set-up and breakdown materials and equipment into various positions within the park and our storage facilities.
  • Possession of OSHA 10 or 30, Fall/Arrest training, or other relevant certifications a plus
  • Valid NY-State Driver’s License required

Maintenance Technicians

Work collaboratively with the operations team to maintain a safe and welcoming park for all by: 

  • Performing preventive and reactive maintenance tasks and for park fixtures, equipment, and the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and irrigation systems. 
  • Following through on daily work orders, documenting progress via regular reporting in an online work order system, and completing tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Performing other duties as required in the scope of the job and as designated by the Park Operations Manager, Maintenance Supervisor, or Head of Horticulture.
  • Having the ability to transport park equipment weighing up to 50 lbs, as well as set-up and breakdown materials and equipment into various positions within the park and our storage facilities
  • Possession of OSHA 10 or 30, Fall/Arrest training, or other relevant certifications a plus
  • Valid NY-State Driver’s License required

Visitor Experience Hosts

Serve as the primary Little Island representatives for the public, cultivating a dynamic and memorable experience for all park visitors by: 

  • Knowing and communicating basic knowledge about Little Island, including park access points, park rules, background and historical information, and performance and programming details.
  • Setting up, breaking down, and assisting as needed with park programs, recreational events, and other organizational initiatives. The ability to transport or lift park equipment ranging from 30-60 lbs., as well as the set-up and breakdown of materials and equipment, is not required of everyone on the team but some Hosts will need to complete these tasks.
  • Acting as house staff for amphitheater events, checking tickets, helping visitors find their seats, and ensuring visibility to provide support or information as needed.
  • Tracking and managing visitation levels as outlined by the Visitor Experience department in service of ensuring a safe experience for all visitors, particularly as it relates to COVID-19 protocols, crowd management, and the overall visitor experience.
  • Aiding in the safety and care of the park; including early park closures due to severe weather, assisting with snow and ice removal, and participating in fire guard and safety training to perform essential safety-related responsibilities.
  • Having the availability and flexibility to work a wide array of shifts to ensure our park is staffed at all operating hours (as early as 5:30 am in the morning and as late as 1:30 am in the evening).

  • Comfortable working independently and with a team outside in a park-setting
  • Availability to work early morning or late evening shifts at Little Island, in addition to weekends or holidays regularly
  • Patience, adaptability, and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Experience prioritizing safety and an excellent standard of care
  • Enthusiasm for public space, experience working in a public or outdoor space a plus

What to Expect 

  • Little Island will be open year-round, from 6 am - 1 am daily.
  • Little Island has 3 distinct performances spaces hosting a wide variety of artistic programs throughout the season including a 700-seat amphitheater
  • Park employees will work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Park employees will spend time onsite at Little Island, navigating the entire park and interacting with park visitors to ensure operations are running effectively. Little Island is ADA compliant, and park employees are committed to fostering an inclusive environment for each other and our park’s visitors.
  • Little Island’s Headquarters, located near the park, provides an open floor plan office, shared work areas and kitchen, a locker room, rehearsal space, and storage for the park. It is a dynamic and multi-use space where employees and artists can collaborate, connect, and unwind in between shifts, meetings, and events.
  • Little Island is opening its park for all New Yorkers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. All park employees are expected to actively participate in our communal commitment to employee safety and health and all related employee policies, which are reinforced with our current employees often and will be shared throughout the interview process.
