Engagement and Education Programs Manager

About the Role

Little Island seeks an experienced professional arts educator and administrator who will be responsible for supporting the implementation of an array of arts-based community engagement and educational programming. This position reports to the Director of Engagement and Education. The ideal candidate has demonstrated commitment working for positive social change through the arts, a background in youth development, and a practical understanding of culturally responsive pedagogy. This position is full-time and reports to the Director of Engagement and Education.


Engagement and Education Park Programs Responsibilities

  • Collaborates closely with the Director of Engagement and Education to deliver a suite of engagement and education programs to engage, educate, and employ local people of all ages in the community and in the park
  • Supervises a weekly series of Creative Breaks and educational artistic programming onsite at Little Island during the summer season.
  • Acts as point of contact for community partners and internal stakeholders on the execution of workshops and events in the park and offsite.
  • Oversees the implementation of Art Cart programming, online arts-based webisodes, and workshops onsite at the park and with community partners. Responsibilities include coordinating staffing and refining the artistic experiences based on audience interaction and feedback
  • Facilitates workshops for Little Island park visitors and community partners
  • Facilitates the content development of Little Island program curriculum, lesson plans, and online webisodes
  • Conducts formal observations of Little Island engagement and education community programs to assess the quality of our work, with an eye toward continual improvement

Internship Program and Teaching Artist Management Responsibilities

  • Manages the day-to-day communications and supervision for the Little Island Internship program during the Fall and Spring
  • Oversees the curation of expeditions, educational seminars, and networking opportunities for Little Island interns, as well as builds and maintains the internship alumni network
  • Works closely with the Director of Engagement and Education to recruit, hire, and train teaching artists and college-aged interns
  • Tracks project budgets and teaching artist work assignments for all Engagement and Education programs
  • Collaborates closely with the Engagement and Education Coordinator to ensure the department’s programs, budgets, and systems are upheld
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned

What You Bring

  • 5 or more years managing engagement and education-based arts programs; expertise as a teaching artist in dance, storytelling, visual arts, or music preferred
  • A degree in arts education, applied theatre, or related fields a plus but not required
  • Fluency in a language rather than English a plus
  • A passion for creating and facilitating community access to public space and public art
  • Experience producing digital educational content preferred
  • Capability to work in a fast-paced, start-up environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey the mission and goals of the park to professionals and the public
  • Comfortable working both independently and in collaboration with a diversity of stakeholders include team members, artists, or visitors outside in our park-setting
  • Availability to work a Tuesday-Saturday work week beginning June 2021-September 2021, with additional evening hours as required
  • Eligibility to work in the US
  • Availability to start ASAP

What to Expect

  • Little Island will be open year-round, from 6am-1am daily.
  • Little Island has 3 distinct performances spaces hosting a wide variety of artistic programs throughout the season including a 700-seat amphitheater
  • Park employees will work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Park employees will spend time onsite at Little Island, navigating the entire park and interacting with park visitors to ensure operations are running effectively. Little Island is ADA compliant, and park employees are committed to fostering an inclusive environment for each other and our park’s visitors.
  • Little Island’s Headquarters, located near the park, provides an open floor plan office, shared work areas and kitchen, a locker room, rehearsal space, and storage for the park. It is a dynamic and multi-use space where employees and artists can collaborate, connect, and unwind in between shifts, meetings and events.
  • Little Island is opening its park for all New Yorkers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. All park employees are expected to actively participate in our communal commitment to employee safety and health and all related employee policies, which are reinforced with our current employees often and will be shared throughout the interview process.
